The Philadelphia Union have remained quiet throughout the offseason, but an international signing indicates the club is gearing up for 2014.

The club announced Wednesday that it has signed Argentine midfielder Cristian Maidana as a Designated Player. Per MLS and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Maidana has experience playing on three continents, as the 26-year-old last played in his native country for Argentinos Juniors. Prior to that, he featured for Mexican side Atlante, and has played for European clubs Spartak Moscow and Recreativo de Huelva.

“I was able to see Cristian play several times and I came away extremely impressed with his technical skills, creativity and one vs. one ability,” said Philadelphia coach John Hackworth in a statement. “After having met him personally, I felt even more confident that he was the type of person and player who can benefit our club on and off the field. We are excited that Cristian is a member of the Union.”

Maidana's arrival brings experience to a Union team that is among the youngest in the league. In 2013, the team finished seventh in the Eastern Conference, and will be looking to make the MLS Cup playoffs for the second time in their history in 2014.
