The drumbeat keeps growing: Jermain Defoe is headed to Toronto FC to sign a massive Designated Player deal that might even rank as one of the most lucrative in MLS history.

That's if you believe the latest round of scuttlebutt out of south Ontario, where a tweet from TSN analyst Luke Wileman on Wednesday poured more fuel on the fire one day after SI.com reported that TFC's capture of the Tottenham Hotspur striker was “not done yet, but close,” with the England striker's move only held by concerns about his place in his country's 2014 World Cup squad.

Depending on how you interpret it, even TFC themselves could be seen as encouraging the speculation and anticipation, as the club posted a teaser promising "A Bloody Big Deal" coming on Monday's date on their official Twitter feed around the same time as Wileman's update.

Wileman subsequently posted a report on TSN's website with more details of the supposed Defoe deal, which, if the numbers are accurate, would place the English international among the league's highest-paid players.

Defoe, 31, has scored 19 goals in 55 career appearances for the English national team. This season he's scored seven goals in five UEFA Europa League contests and netted two strikes in three League Cup games for Tottenham.

At the time of publication, Toronto FC officials had not responded to MLSsoccer.com's requests for comment.
