Midfielder Brian "Cobi" Span signs with MLS, weighted lottery scheduled for Thursday

Midfielder Brian Span has signed with Major League Soccer and will be allocated in a weighted lottery on Thursday at 10 am ET.

Span, who goes by the nickname "Cobi," most recently played for Swedish club Djurgårdens IF. After playing collegiately at the University of Virginia for two years, the New York native signed with the Swedish club in 2012, where he scored a goal soon after making his professional debut. However, following the 2013 season, his contract was not renewed and he became a free agent.

Players eligible for the weighted lottery are: "Generation adidas players signed after the MLS SuperDraft or draft eligible players to whom an MLS contract was offered but who failed to sign with the League prior to the Draft."

Five MLS teams have entered the lottery, with FC Dallas having the best shot of landing Span with a 41.1 percent chance. According to the MLS roster rules, "the team with the worst record over its last 34 regular season games (dating back to previous season if necessary and taking playoff performance into account) will have the greatest probability of winning the lottery."

Other teams in the running include the Chicago Fire (27 percent chance), the San Jose Earthquakes (18.7 percent) and the New England Revolution (12.3 percent). Real Salt Lake have the longest odds of landing Span at just a 0.9 percent.

The team that wins the lottery for Span will not be able to participate in another weighted player lottery this season unless all teams have taken a player via the process or have waived their option to participate in the lottery.
