Could Stoke City add yet another American to the books this winter? It’s certainly a possibility according to The Mirror.

If the report is to be believed, Mark Hughes is targeting striker Aron Johannsson as a replacement for Peter Crouch. That comes on the heels of reports that Celtic are after the 22-year-old AZ Alkmaar striker.

According to the report, Stoke are closing in on a £5 million deal, which would bring the club’s American contingent to four if completed. Geoff Cameron, Maurice Edu and Brek Shea – currently on loan at Barnsley – are all members of the Potters’ squad.

Johannsson has scored 11 goals in 18 Eredivisie games this season after replacing fellow USMNT striker Jozy Altidore, who earned a transfer to Sunderland this summer, in the Cheese Farmers starting XI.

The former Iceland U-21 forward has six caps for the USMNT, scoring his lone goal in a 3-2 victory on the road in Panama that gave Jurgen Klinsmann’s side the top spot in the Hex.

What do you think? Would it be a good move for Johannsson ahead of the World Cup?
