Sporting KC's Oriol Rosell called up by Catalonia for friendly in Barcelona
Oriol Rosell's dream year just gets dreamier.
On Tuesday, a few weeks after winning the MLS Cup with Sporting Kansas City, the Barcelona native was called up to the Catalonian national team for a friendly vs. the Cape Verde Islands on Dec. 30.
The match will take place at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Barcelona.
Rosell, 21, will be joined by FC Barcelona's Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Cesc Fàbregas and Gerard Piqué, Espanyol's Sergio Garcia, and Ajax's Bojan Krcic. Before coming to Kansas City midway through the 2012 season, Rosell -- known as Uri -- was at Barca's La Masia youth academy with Fàbregas and Piqué.
"It will be an amazing experience to play with these players," Rosell said in a statement released by Sporting KC. "They have a lot of quality and are some of the best in the world. It's going to be a big party and a big game and I could not be more excited. I always say I'm from Catalonia and now to be with the first team with those great players will be a very emotional experience for me."
The Catalonian Football Federation is not affiliated with FIFA or UEFA, and the best Catalonian players also represent Spain internationally, but La Selecció, which was previously managed by Johan Cruyff and is now coached by Gerard Lopez, plays friendlies as representives of the autonomous community of Catalonia.
