American Exports: Jermaine Jones, Schalke drawn with Real Madrid in Champions League knockouts
AMSTERDAM – Three Americans were drawn into the Champions League and Europa League knockouts, with Jermaine Jones' Schalke set for a Real Madrid test in the former tourney's round of 16.
It will be the first clash between the two teams, with Schalke boasting a 7-9-7 European record against Spanish sides. Jones will play in the Champions League knockout round for the third time in his career. The tie kicks off in Germany on Feb. 26, with the Bernabéu return set for March 18.
Turning focus to the Europa League, Aron Jóhannsson and AZ Alkmaar have been locked into a round of 32 duel with Czech outfit Slovan Liberec.
The Cheese Farmers hosted a 2-2 UEFA Cup group stage draw in their only previous meeting back in 2006. The teams will open play in Liberec on February 20, with the decider in Alkmaar a week later. The winner will advance to face the PAOK/Benfica survivor in the Round of 16.
Also, Brad Friedel will hope for more cup action when Tottenham travel to Ukraine for leg one with new foe Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk on Feb. 20. The scene will switch to White Hart Lane a week later, with the tie winner lined up to tackle either Real Betis or Rubin Kazan in the Round of 16.
