DC United and Inter Milan, under common owner Erick Thohir, announce strategic partnership

That didn't take long.

Just weeks after D.C. United co-owner Erick Thohir took over Italian club Inter Milan, a "collaborative agreement to form a strategic partnership" was announced on Monday that will have Thohir's two soccer teams working together.

“We are thankful for the opportunity to work collaboratively with Inter," said D.C. managing general partner Jason Levien (pictured above with Inter VP Angelomario Moratti) in a club statement. "We believe this relationship will prove a significant benefit to D.C. United's growth and long-term achievement.”

According to the clubs, the partnership will include: "sharing of team, organizational and competitive best practices ... subject to relevant rules and regulations of the appropriate governing bodies."

Thohir, an Indonesian media magnate, assumed majority control over FC internazionale Milano (commonly known as Inter Milan) on November 15, a little more than a year after becoming co-owner of D.C. United on July 10, 2012.

Colorado Rapids owner Stan Kroenke (English Premier League club Arsenal), Chivas USA's Jorge Vergara and Anjelica Fuentes (Mexico's Chivas Guadalajara), LA Galaxy owners Anschutz Entertainment Group (Swedish side Hammarby), NYCFC co-owners Manchester City and Red Bull (Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg among others) are the other MLS owners who also control clubs overseas.

Other MLS clubs that have existing partnerships include: the Chicago Fire (with Atlético Madrid, Internacional and Club América), Real Salt Lake (with Real Madrid), San Jose Earthquakes (with Tottenham Hotspur) and FC Dallas (Tigres UANL and Atlético Paranaense).
