American Exports: Terrence Boyd hits brace, Brad Friedel hits milestone in Europa League action

AMSTERDAM – A trio of Americans suited up for Europa League action on Thursday, with Terrence Boyd striking twice in Rapid Vienna's 2-2 home draw with Group G leaders Genk.

The US forward (above) overturned a deficit with a quick pair of headers at the end of the opening frame. Boyd nodded home a rebound in the 40th minute to level and then buried a corner-kick serve on the edge of halftime, taking his goal total across all competitions this term to 10.

The point lifted Rapid into third place, four points shy of an advancement slot with two games left in group play.

Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur netminder Brad Friedel stayed perfect on the campaign by backstopping a 2-1 home victory over Sheriff Tiraspol.

The 42-year-old, who became the oldest player ever to start a Europa League match, made four saves to notch his fourth win in as many outings this term. The result assured Group K leaders Spurs of a place in the knockouts.

Aron Jóhannsson worked the first half as AZ Alkmaar remained level on points with the top of Group L by blanking Kazakh guests Shakhter Karagandy 1-0.

The No. 20 shirt was robbed at close range on his only chance of the evening. Though still trailing on goal differential, AZ can clinch a place in the next round with as as much as a draw in their final two games.
