American Exports: Timothy Chandler's assist for Nurnberg highlights Friday action
AMSTERDAM – A handful of Americans took to Friday night lights across the Atlantic, with FC Nürnberg right back Timothy Chandler setting up the early 1-1 equalizer at Stuttgart.
The visitors fell behind to a third-minute penalty kick by former St. Louis University forward Vedad Ibisevic, but replied quickly scant moments later. In the sixth minute, Chandler slipped Josip Drmic in alone on the right side of the area and the Switzerland international cleverly finished with the outside of his boot.
Still winless with a Bundesliga-high seven draws from 10 games, Nürnberg pulled to within two points of the safety zone.
One flight down, Alfredo Morales was solid as he went the distance in defensive midfield as Ingolstadt climbed out of the cellar with a 1-0 win away to title chasers Greuther Fürth. Making his first league start in more than a month, the US international helped the visitors post their second 2.Bundesliga road win in a row.
Next door in France's Ligue 1, Alejandro Bedoya watched from the home dugout as Nantes suffered a 1-0 defeat against Lille. The fourth-place Canaries saw their four-game win streak come to an end.
Up in Denmark's Superliga, Babajide Ogunbiyi ably marshaled the Viborg defense in a 4-1 rout of guests FC Vestsjælland. The hulking center back logged eight clearances and as many pass interceptions as the surprising Greens tentatively moved into second place.
Finally, in the Dutch second flight, Charles Kazlauskas went all 90 at right back as Helmond Sport rallied late for a 3-2 win away to former employers FC Oss. The result extended the seventh-place side's undefeated streak to four games, bringing them to within four points of the league penthouse.
