The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup has offered up plenty of magical midweek nights for the American soccer faithful over the years.

But that Open Cup drama may not be exclusive to Tuesdays and Wednesdays any more in 2014.

MLSsoccer.com has learned that a proposal is being discussed by members of the US Open Cup Committee to play at least one of the rounds of the 2014 edition on a weekend.

It would mark the first time in the modern era of the US Open Cup that matches other than a final would be held on a weekend.

The US Open Cup Committee — composed of officials from the various US divisions as well as from the U.S. Soccer Federation and a player representative — deliberates and settles on fixture dates for the various rounds of the competition before the close of the calendar year.

The different leagues — MLS, NASL and USL — then program their league schedules around those dates.

It's anticipated that more than one round in 2014 will be staged during the same month as the 2014 FIFA World Cup in June.

And with MLS entertaining a stoppage of league play during that period, it could open up the opportunity for the weekend experiment.
