American Exports: Jose Torres instrumental as Tigres UANL earn first win of the season
GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Jose Torres slotted back into the Tigres UANL starting XI after returning from the Gold Cup and helped guide his team to its first win of the season, a 2-0 victory over Pumas UNAM on Sunday.
Torres operated in his usual central midfield role alongside Carlos Salcido and was pivotal in Tigres’ first goal, when he filtered the ball in behind the defense for Damián Álvarez, who crossed for Danilihno to tap in.
The 25-year-old Texan was influential and dangerous in possession in the first half, although he did seem to tire in the heat and altitude of the Ciudad Universitaria in Mexico City and was brought off with one minute to go.
On Saturday, Michael Orozco Fiscal was also handed his first start of the season and went the full 90 minutes at right back for Puebla, in their 4-2 loss at Chiapas.
DaMarcus Beasley came off the bench at halftime for La Franja and swung in the corner from which Alfredo Moreno headed in Puebla’s first goal.
In Mexico’s second division, Jesus Padilla started Friday in Dorados’ 2-1 victory over Correcaminos and went 74 minutes, while Sonny Guadarrama went 89 minutes in Necaxa’s 2-1 win over Zacatepec on Saturday.
