Landon Donovan wears his sunglasses wherever he wants, Mr. Referee | THE SIDELINE
Landon Donovan is currently playing some of his best soccer for the US national team in quite some time. Since returning to the USMNT for the first time since his self-imposed "soccer sabbatical" earlier this year, Donovan has contributed five goals and seven assists in the national team's five games played.
The LA Galaxy midfielder has run his national team career stat totals up to 54 goals and 55 assists, which is a lot. But perhaps more importantly than what any number can tell of Donovan's accomplishments, Donovan looks to be having fun on the field, playing for the US again.
That sentiment was more evident late in Sunday's 5-1 quarterfinal victory over El Salvador than any other time in the 2013 Gold Cup to this point. With Donovan set to take a corner kick on the television broadcast's far side, M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore suddenly turned into Estadio Azteca in Mexico City for the American's all-time leading goal scorer and assist man.
The Baltimore skies had opened up and it was raining hard, but more than rain descended upon Donovan and the corner flag. Mostly bottles, and oddly enough, a pair of sunglasses landed at his feet.
Naturally, Landon put his "stunna shades" on, as the kids are saying these days. Or, at least they were in 2005.
