The MLS summer transfer window formally opened on Tuesday and the San Jose Earthquakes are not wasting any time importing talent.

After signing US international defender Clarence Goodson last week, the club on Tuesday announced the acquisition of English left-sided defender/midfielder Jordan Stewart.

The Earthquakes were already familiar with the 31-year-old, who has extensive experience in the top three tiers of English soccer. Stewart previously worked out with the Earthquakes in 2012.

“We’re very excited to add Jordan to our squad,” Earthquakes interim head coach Mark Watson said in a club statement. “He came and trained with us last year and did very well. He brings a lot of experience at the highest level of soccer and he will be an excellent addition the club.”

The former England youth international (U-18s and U-21s) began his career with Leicester City, where he broke into the English Premier League in 1999. After six seasons with the Foxes, Stewart played for Watford, Derby County, Sheffield United, Millwall, Notts County and Coventry City. He also had a spell with Skoda Xanthi in Greece.

Stewart will join the Earthquakes pending the receipt of his P-1 visa and international transfer certificate (ITC).
