The ongoing saga between defender Steven Caldwell and his temporary home Toronto FC appears to have entered into its final hours as the June 30 deadline looms ever closer.

Caldwell, 32, joined Toronto on loan back on May 7, a deal lasting until his current contract with English Championship club Birmingham City expires at the end of the month. TFC head coach Ryan Nelsen has stated his desire to keep Caldwell beyond the mid-season expiration date, and Caldwell has publicly stated to the Toronto Sun's Kurt Larson on Friday his wish to stay with the Canadian club beyond Saturday's game against Real Salt Lake:

Caldwell has started the last five games for the Reds, a span in which TFC have conceded only five goals. In what is surely a rebuilding season for Toronto under their first year head coach, Caldwell would be an ideal player to remain within the club as a stabilizing figure and consistent performer, at least until the end of the 2013 season.
