AMSTERDAM – As expected, Steve Cherundolo has signed a one-year contract extension with Hannover 96.

Last September, the US right back told MLSsoccer.com that his plan was to continue as "the Mayor of Hannover" until the 2014 World Cup, when he will then seek out an MLS move. Mere days after the 34-year-old set a new club record with 299 Bundesliga appearances, the Reds announced the captain will be back for his 16th season.

"Steven Cherundolo is a prime example of loyalty, reliability and performance," Hannover boss Mirko Slomka told the club website. "I am pleased that he will be in the coming season with us. Stevie has my respect."

If Eintracht Frankfurt netminder Ola Nikolov is not re-signed this summer, Cherundolo will return to action as the longest-serving one-club man in the Bundesliga. Including cup matches and second-flight contests, the Illinois native has played 412 times since joining Hannover out of college in 1999.

Currently ninth in the table, Cherundolo and his teammates will close the season by hosting Fortuna Düsseldorf on Saturday.
