American Exports: Club Tijuana earn spot in Copa Libertadores Round of 16

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – With Joe Corona and Edgar Castillo back at home resting, Club Tijuana managed a 1-1 draw Wednesday against San José in Bolivia to secure a place in the last 16 of the Copa Libertadores.

There was American involvement however, with Texan Greg Garza coming on for the last six minutes of the game in high altitude to help secure the vital point for Xolos.

Fidel Martínez opened the scoring in the 65th for the Liga MX champions when he stole the ball off the last defender and finished, with Marcelo Gómez getting the equalizer for San José nine minutes from time.

Tijuana defeated Colombian champions Millonarios 1-0 away in February and beat current Club World Cup champions Corinthians1-0  last month in Group 5, helping Xolos qualify for the knockout stages with one game left to play.

In Copa MX play, also Wednesday, Puebla were knocked out in the semifinals by Atlante, 5-4 on penalties, after the game in Cancún ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Neither DaMarcus Beasley nor Michael Orozco Fiscal was in the 18 for La Franja.
