Four MLS players called up to Honduras squad for March World Cup qualifiers
The Honduran national team called up four MLS players to their 23-man squad for World Cup qualifiers later this month.
San Jose's Víctor Bernárdez, New England's Jerry Bengtson, Houston midfielder Boniek García and Seattle midfielder Mario Martínez will join former MLSers Roger Espinoza (Wigan Athletic) and Carlo Costly (Veria) for matches home to Mexico on March 22 and at Panama on March 26.
"It's going to be a difficult and hard-fought match and we're going to face a team with a lot of quality," said Honduras manager Luis Fernández Suárez said in a press conference announcing the squad. "We have a great opportunity to show our strengths. We have to capitalize on our home field advantage. We know that if we win, we'll take a big step toward qualifying."
Honduras kicked off their CONCACAF Hexagonal campaign with a 2-1 win against the US national team on February 6 in San Pedro Sula. The top three national teams advance to the World Cup in Brazil 2014 with the fourth-place team entering a playoff against the winner of the Oceania region.
