Ex-PSG star Luyindula has one last chance to impress NY
TUCSON, Ariz. — Saturday's third-place match at the Desert Diamond Cup may be the final audition for Péguy Luyindula.
The French striker has been in New York Red Bulls camp here in Arizona as a guest after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, and head coach Mike Petke told MLSsoccer.com on Friday that the team would make a decision on the 33-year-old "after Saturday."
Luyindula has yet to make an impact on the score sheet during his time with RBNY. He has played a total of 113 minutes in three Desert Diamond Cup appearances but has yet to log a goal or figure in a scoring opportunity.
"He’s not in his ideal shape right now," Petke said. "He’s admitted that. [But] you see little things every day."
A native of Zaire (now the Demo, Luyindula is a friend of Thierry Henry, as well as a former French national teammate of the Red Bulls captain. He also played alongside New York newcomer Juninho Pernambucano at Olympique Lyonnais.
Luyindula hasn't seen regular action since the Qatari takeover of PSG, and both parties agreed to terminate his contract last month.
The former French U-21 star will hope to get more minutes when the Red Bulls face New England in the third-place match at the Desert Diamond Diamond Cup on Saturday.
