Bolton Wanderers midfielder and US international Stuart Holden apparently got an unwelcome calling card in the latest chapter of his comeback on Friday afternoon, as he found himself on the wrong end of a nasty tackle in the first half of Bolton’s U-21 match against Manchester City and had to limp off the field in the 32nd minute.

Holden has gradually been working his way back to full fitness after a serious knee injury sidelined him for nearly two years, and Friday’s game was supposed to offer another step forward in that process after his appearances in the FA Cup last month.

The challenge had him wincing in pain and favoring his right foot as he left the pitch, however, with Bolton supporters in attendance sharing photos and worried updates via Twitter.

The former Houston Dynamo star became a driving force in Bolton’s midfield soon after his transfer to the club three years ago, and the team suffered noticeably when he was injured by a lunge from Manchester United’s Johnny Evans in March 2011 and were relegated from the English Premier League last year.

The same fan subsequently tweeted out more encouraging news after saying he’d spoken briefly to Holden, though.
