Timbers cast-off Songo'o impresses in trial with Dynamo
HOUSTON – There was a new face in orange during the Dynamo’s 3-0 scrimmage win over Houston Baptist University on Saturday, as Portland Timbers cast-off Franck Songo’o officially began his trial in Houston.
The Dynamo received permission to take a look at Songo’o after it became clear there was no spot for him under new head coach Caleb Porter. The Timbers, however, still own the winger’s rights.
“I just want to give my all and play with passion and be on a winning team and have a winning attitude and really fit into the group,” Songo’o told MLSsoccer.com.
Songo’o appeared in 27 games last season for Portland after previously making stops in Spain and England during his career. Originally from Cameroon, Songo’o is a former youth player in the Barcelona system.
After landing in Houston Friday night, Songo’o entered at the half of Saturday’s scrimmage and showed a crisp touch and passing skill that belied a dormant few months during the offseason.
“It was my first day back at work after three months so physically I’m not there yet," he said. "It felt nice to get in with the guys. I want to get into what the team wants, win the conference, get to the playoffs and win the MLS Cup and have a good season.”
He will travel with the club to Arizona to continue his trial before a decision on his future is made. The club is expected to leave on Monday and will begin play in the Desert Friendlies against the Colorado Rapids on Thursday.
