Report: Celtic still holding out hope of landing Agudelo

Last year it was Liverpool. Then it was West Ham. After a bit, it became Glasgow Celtic.

Basically, since he burst onto the scene in the 2010 playoffs, transfer rumors have always swirled around Juan Agudelo. These latest, though, just won't quite go away.

According to Celtic manager Neil Lennon, the Old Firm club are still holding out hope of landing the Chivas USA and US national team striker — and there could be news on that front by the weekend.

"We are monitoring that situation at the minute," Lennon told Scotland's Evening Times on Thursday when asked about a potential move for Agudelo. "We might have something over the next couple of days. I can't be more definite than that just now."

Agudelo had spent three weeks on trial at Celtic this winter, allegedly leading to a transfer offer. Neither Chivas USA nor the MLS league office would confirm that an offer had been made, and the fact remains that the Rojiblancos have opened training camp while the transfer window closes in less than a week. It won't open again until the summer.

Celtic are in need of reinforcements ahead of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 showdown with Italian giants Juventus. Agudelo, meanwhile, is currently in camp with the US national team, and had an assist on the opener in a 3-0 win over Club Tijuana in a closed-door scrimmage earlier in the week.

The one-time Red Bull's situation with Chivas appears to be somewhat precarious, as new coach José Luis Sánchez Solá (a.k.a. "El Chelís") has made it clear that he plans to build a roster of Mexican and Mexican-American talent. Agudelo was born in Colombia and moved to the US with his family at age 7, and does not have any Mexican heritage.

Nonetheless, El Chelis tweeted earlier in the month that he sees Agudelo as a potential starter up front, alongside Guadalajara loanee Giovani Casillas:
