GUADALAJARA, Mexico – New York-born winger Diego Chávarri (above) has moved to Peruvian first-division club Unión Comercio in hopes of jump-starting his career.

The 23-year-old left Sport Huancayo when his contract ran out at the end of last year, having only appeared once all season.

The youngster, who has previously stated his willingness to play for the United States, will be hoping the move signals a change of luck in his career.

Chávarri burst onto the Peruvian soccer scene with Sporting Cristal in 2009, even gaining admirers over in Europe.

Since then injuries have hampered his progress, moving from Sporting Cristal in 2011 to an unsuccessful trial with USL outfit Orlando City, then to Cobresol and finally to Sport Huancayo.

Unión Comercio kick off the new Peruvian season on Feb. 9 against José Gálvez. The team is currently in preseason and finished in 12th position in the 16-team league last season.
