AMSTERDAM – It was an eventful Saturday for Americans taking part in FA Cup third-round action, led by Clint Dempsey's two goals and an assist in Tottenham's 3-0 win over guests Coventry City.

The US star beat his mark to fire home a Gareth Bale flick-on after 14 minutes. A saving tackle kept Dempsey from doubling the lead shortly thereafter, but he picked up an assist when Bale deposited his deflected shot in the 33rd minute.

The American closed the scoring four minutes later by burying a corner kick for his seventh goal across all competitions on the campaign. Dempsey made a bid for the hat trick near intermission, only to have his stunning self-made volley sail just over.

Compatriot Brad Friedel would profit from Dempsey's production, registering his first clean sheet for Spurs since EPL closing day last May. The veteran netminder recorded four saves, include a late dazzler on William Edjenguele to preserve the shutout.

The news was not so good for Birmingham City right back Will Packwood, who suffered a broken leg midway through the second period of a 1-1 draw at Leeds United. The US Under-20 international was forced off in the 66th minute.

Geoff Cameron went the distance at right back as Stoke City set up a home replay with a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace. The former Houston Dynamo ace went close to scoring with a drive just wide of frame in the 23rd minute.

Aston Villa right back Eric Lichaj worked all 90 minutes in a 2-1 victory over Ipswich Town. With Brad Guzan watching from the dugout, the defender had the visitors' opener carom off him into the net.

Derby County forward Conor Doyle notched an assist in 16 relief minutes as Derby cruised 5-1 past Tranmere. The youngster set up the home side's final goal by releasing fellow reserve team prospect Mason Bennett.

Meanwhile, Tim Ream went unused as Bolton collapsed late to settle for a 2-2 draw with visiting Sunderland.
