American Exports: Ex-FCD striker Luna on trial in Mexico
GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Former FC Dallas striker Ruben Luna is on trial at his hometown club Correcaminos, in Mexico’s second division, and hoping to earn a permanent place on the roster for next season.
“It would be very special to play for the club where I was born,” the 20-year-old told Extremo Deportivo earlier this week. “I’ve got to demonstrate the desire I have to remain at Correcaminos to the coach on the pitch.”
The forward was cut from Schellas Hyndman’s squad following a disappointing 2012 season for FC Dallas after Luna had impressed as top scorer of the MLS Reserve League in 2011. The Mexico-born Luna spent part of this past season on loan with the San Antonio Scorpions of the NASL.
“I’m happy to return to Ciudad Victoria,” he continued. “I went to the United States when I was very young, but in spite of that I’ve been keeping up with [Correcaminos].”
Luna has featured in two scrimmages so far for Correcaminos in front of new coach Joaquín del Olmo, who replaced outgoing José Luis “Chelís” Sánchez.
Correcaminos reached the final of the Copa MX last season.
