Former D.C. United president and CEO Kevin Payne has been introduced as Toronto FC's president and general manager, the club announced on Wednesday.

Payne announced Tuesday that he was leaving United, amidst speculation that he was set to take the reins in Toronto. Payne had worked for D.C. United since the league's inception in 1996 and the team won an MLS-record four titles under his stewardship.

“We're excited to welcome Kevin to Toronto FC," president and chief operating officer for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Tom Anselmi said in a club statement. “Kevin brings a tremendous wealth of MLS experience and soccer leadership to our club. He is a proven winner and knows what it takes to win in our League. We believe he is the right person to lead our club and a great fit for our community and most importantly our fans.”

Added Payne in the statement: “I am very proud and excited to be joining Toronto FC. Toronto is a great soccer market with passionate fans and world-class facilities. The club has a great ownership team who are committed to winning and providing all the necessary resources to do so.”

TFC introduced Payne at a press conference at BMO Field on Wednesday afternoon.
