American Exports: Diskerud bests Boyd in Europa League
AMSTERDAM – Rapid Vienna forward Terrence Boyd bagged his third Europa League goal on Thursday, but it was Mikkel Diskerud's Rosenborg that walked away 3-2 winners.
After helping to set up the visitors' equalizer just after the break, Boyd was quickest to a rebound to put his side ahead in the 66th minute. Mere moments later, Diskerud had a fair penalty shout ignored after picking a pocket in midfield to race 40 yards to the area. The US midfielder was then shown yellow for dissent.
Rosenborg hit twice in the final quarter-hour to clinch the consolation of a third-place group finish. Despite Boyd's 11th goal across all competitions this term, cellar-dwellers Rapid dropped their sixth straight Europa League match away from home.
Over in Group L, Steve Cherundolo and Hannover 96 battled to a 0-0 stalemate with visiting FC Twente. The result saw the Reds' group lead sliced to a single point by Levante, their Matchday 6 hosts.
Meanwhile, Alejandro Bedoya and Helsingborg remained winless in the group stage with a 3-1 home defeat to Levante. The US midfielder narrowly missed tying the game with 11 minutes to play.
Tottenham Hotspur attacker Clint Dempsey worked a lukewarm 64-minute shift in a 0-0 draw at Lazio. Second-place Spurs can advance to the knockouts with a draw or win on Dec. 6 at home to Panathinaikos.
Finally, in Group E, Josh Gatt and Molde FK lost all hope of reaching the last 32 with a 2-1 home loss to FC Copenhagen. The winger, who went into the ref's book near halftime, could have had a game-tying assist out of fine industry in the waning moments were it not for his teammate's stray finish.
