American Exports: Bocanegra, Rangers kick off new era
AMSTERDAM – Rangers FC began their new existence as a fourth-division side on Tuesday in the first round of the Scottish Communities League Cup, as Carlos Bocanegra & Co. advanced with a 4-0 victory at Ibrox over third-flight East Fife on Tuesday.
The US skipper, who ably worked all 90 minutes in defense, narrowly missed starting the scoring from a corner kick just prior to Lee McCulloch's opener at the quarter-hour.
Rangers have won the last two League Cups and a record 27 all-time. They will learn their second-round opponent in Thursday's draw before opening league play with a Saturday visit to Peterhead.
The Glasgow giants were liquidated in June after going into administration this past February. The relaunched club must play the 2012-13 season in the Scottish Third Division, the fourth tier in Scotland.
Bocanegra's future with the club is unknown, while his fellow US internationals, Maurice Edu and Alejandro Bedoya, appear to be on the way out, according to Rangers' official website.
