Danny Koevermans is on fire, and now he's got even more fuel to stoke the flames.

After scoring twice in games against Montreal and New York, the Toronto FC striker narrowly edged out teammate Torsten Frings to earn MLS Player of the Week honors for Week 17 as voted by media. Koevermans scored the final goal in the Reds' 3-0 victory against their Canadian rivals last Wednesday and followed that up by negating Jan Gunnar Solli’s opener just two minutes after the Red Bulls midfielder stunned the BMO Field crowd in the fourth minute this past Saturday.

After an early-season slump, Koevermans has caught fire and Toronto FC's fortunes have gradually improved, largely behind the Dutch striker's contributions in front of goal. He scored five goals in June alone, bringing his season total to eight in eight starts. In fact, he's already matched his production from 2011, when Koevermans tallied eight times in just 10 games.

GOAL: Koevermans answers back for TFC

Koevermans becomes the first Toronto player to collect the title this year, earning just shy of 25 percent of the first-place votes to edge out Frings. The other players to recieve first-place votes were Seattle's Eddie Johnson, Chicago's Sean Johnson and Marco Pappa and San Jose's Marvin Chávez, Steven Lenhart and Sam Cronin.
