Guy's calf puts him on the shelf yet again in New England

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – In the back of his mind, New England midfielder Ryan Guy knew he might tweak his right calf at some point after he made his return to the field.

It all made a little too much sense. He spent the better part of a month nursing the tightness he felt in the area while trying to avoid more serious injury. He made sure he returned to the lineup just in time to provide cover for the sidelined Clyde Simms in center midfield.

That troublesome calf held out for barely more than one game before it flared up again and forced Guy out of the 3-2 defeat against D.C. United on May 26.

“When you're pushing it hard, the body doesn't always react the way you want it to,” Guy told MLSsoccer.com. “Unfortunately, it didn't go the right way. I jammed my toe a little bit and it kind of threw everything off. I was really disappointed, but I was especially disappointed that we didn't get the result after that.”

The injury kept Guy out of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup exit at Harrisburg last Tuesday and the home 2-0 win over Chicago Fire. Guy said he hopes to return as quickly as possible after the Revolution return from the international break.

“I'm feeling a lot better,” Guy said. “I think I just slightly re-injured whatever I had in the last couple of weeks. It didn't go all of the way. I didn't let it get to the point where it was a grade-two or grade-three strain. I'm on a quick recovery track and I'm trying to get back to training soon.”

Until he returns to full fitness, Guy said he plans to support his teammates and tailor his recovery to ensure he can return to fight for his place in the squad.

“I'm looking to come back,” Guy said. “I can't wait to come back. It's nice to see the guys playing good. I just want to be out there fighting for a spot.”
