Canadian Exports: Borjan helps Romanian club to UCL berth

Milan Borjan’s brief time in Romania was a rollicking success.

While on loan with Vaslui in the Liga 1 from Turkish side Sivasspor, the Canadian national team goalkeeper capped off his spell with the club by recording his fifth clean sheet and ninth win in a row, as Vaslui defeated Universitatea Cluj 1-0 to finish second in the league with 70 points.

Vaslui finished just one point shy of league winners CFR Cluj, but their final standing in the league qualifies them for next season’s UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds.

With most of Canadian players in foreign leagues either finished for the season or headed to Florida to meet up with the national team ahead of three games in June, it was a relatively quiet week for other Canadians abroad.

Most of the other Canadians in action this past week were other goalkeepers.

In Norway, Lars Hirschfeld was in goal during Vålerenga’s 1-0 loss to Hønefoss. It was Vålerenga’s second straight loss after reeling off three consecutive wins. They sit in ninth place in the 16-team Eliteserien on 13 points.

The nightmare continues for fellow goalkeeper Tomer Chencinski in Sweden. It’s now 11 games and counting without a win for Chencinski and his club, Örebro.

On Sunday, Chencinski only gave up a single goal but it was all opponents Syrianski FC would need as that goal stood up for a 1-0 result. Örebro hasn’t exactly given their goalkeeper much support as through 11 games – they have only scored nine times.

They sit dead last in the Allsvenskan with only four points to show for their season.

Continuing the trip through Scandinavia, defender Mason Trafford continues to be playing well with Mariehamn in the Finnish Veikkausliiga.

Trafford has played every minute this season through eight games this season and on Sunday, Mariehamn picked up a 2-1 victory over Inter Turku. The win moved Mariehamn into fourth place on 14 points – seven points adrift of top team HJK, who have played one more game.
