Houston thrilled by "fairytale" moment on Davis goal

HOUSTON – You could not write a better first chapter than the one penned on Saturday afternoon at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Brad Davis, one of two remaining original Houston Dynamo players, provided a moment of poetry in the 67th minute with a sterling strike into the upper 90 to usher in the BBVA Compass era with a 1-0 win over D.C. United. It was the moment many, including his teammates, were hoping for.

“I always say I don’t care who scores as long as they happen, but it was awesome that Brad did it, being one of the originals,” said defender Bobby Boswell after the match. “I think deep down everyone wanted either Brad or [Brian Ching] to score. The fact that Brad scored and Chingy almost got on the board was awesome.”

The sequence seemed to be something that only happens in fairytales. With the soldout crowd fretting that the big day would end with a scoreless draw, Davis fired a curling strike into the far upper 90 to send the fans into a frenzy. Immediately, Davis raced to the supporters groups in the “Walker End” section of the stadium.

“As soon I let it go, I knew it was headed for the upper corner,” Davis said. “After I turned around, the first thing I wanted to do was go celebrate with our supporters section. It went in and I wanted to share the moment with them.”

The beauty of the strike and the reaction of the fans seemed to relieve all the tension and stress of the six-year wait for this day. In the end, it would’ve been an injustice not to have the Hollywood ending.

“I don’t think we have a whole lot of picture perfect moments,” Boswell said. “So it was great to see one of our marquee guys get the game winner.”
