American Exports: Free agent Burns on trial in Denmark
AMSTERDAM — Free agent midfielder Kevin Burns has arrived in Denmark to begin a trial with second-flight side FC Hjørring, MLSsoccer.com. The 26-year-old Indiana native, who appeared in a career-high 19 games for the Columbus Crew last season, will spend a week training with the ninth-place team.
A source in Germany indicated that Burns may also have another trial opportunity in the 3.Bundesliga. Meanwhile, his agent confirmed that the midfielder both rejected an extension offer from Columbus last summer and nearly joined an Eastern Conference rival in the recent Re-Entry Draft.
"He was close to being picked up," Burns rep Robert Feigenson told MLSsoccer.com. "[...] It was almost assured until 15 minutes before the draft took place because they were able to sign someone else from outside the draft at the same position. He has some credibility in MLS, but now was the time to try Europe before it was too late."
Burns has played 38 career regular-season matches since being selected by Columbus in the 2007 MLS Supplemental Draft. He was unable to participate in the Crew's ensuing championship season as a rookie due to a severe ankle injury.
