DC United's Najar to train with Tottenham Hotspur

D.C. United's Andy Najar will begin training with EPL side Tottenham Hotspur on Monday, the club revealed on Friday.

The training stint will begin on Monday, November 28, and run through Saturday, December 10.

"We are pleased to finalize Andy's stay with Tottenham," United GM Dave Kasper said. "I think this experience will be tremendous for him. He will come away from this as a better player, and we look forward to having him back with us shortly."

Going to Europe for training has always been a strategy for getting young MLS players more experience, but this season has seemingly become even more prevalent, particularly in the wake of US national team manager Jurgen Klinsmann's comments. Klinsmann recently lamented the relative shortness of the MLS season and urged young MLSers to get more training in Europe this winter.

Najar is the third United player to confirm a training stint in Europe. Goalkeeper Bill Hamid is at EPL side West Bromwich Albion and defender Perry Kitchen is at Bundesliga side SC Freiburg.

"It's great for our players to get into a different environment and have a different experience," Kasper said. "We feel it's good for their continued development. It's certainly aligned with the philosophy that Jurgen Klinsmann has made public, which is that our offseason is too long and our players need to continue training."

Kasper also hinted that more United players could be headed abroad in the coming weeks.
