Canada pick up Attakora for World Cup qualifiers
Canada announced on Monday that San Jose defender Nana Attakora has been called up to their national squad for the two upcoming World Cup qualifiers with St. Kitts and Nevis.
The 22-year-old former Toronto FC player will replace TFC teenager Matt Stinson, who withdrew with an injury.
The Canucks will travel to the Caribbean to play in Basseterre on Nov. 11 before returning to host the Kittians in Toronto at BMO Field on Nov. 15. Stephen Hart’s side need just a point from their final two qualifiers to reach next year’s third round of CONCACAF qualification for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The defender started 24 games for Toronto FC in 2010 and started the 2011 season with the Reds, before switching to San Jose. Attakora started five games for San Jose in 2011.
Attakora has appeared just once before with the Canadian national side, coming on as a second half substitute in a 1-0 loss to Jamaica on Jan. 31, 2010.
