Spector still joins up with US squad after weekend injury

AMSTERDAM — Despite leaving their weekend win early with a minor ankle sprain, Birmingham City handyman Jonathan Spector was granted Monday leave to join up with the US national team in Miami, as expected.

The US — who remain in search of a first win under Jurgen Klinsmann — are slated to host Honduras in the Magic City on Saturday before shifting to Red Bull Arena in New Jersey for an Oct. 11 date with Ecuador.

Spector was removed 12 minutes into Sunday's victory over Robbie Findley and Nottingham Forest, but the club says the change was simply made as a precaution.

"He's gone off on international duty, as normal," Blues press officer Andy Walker told MLSsoccer.com. "I'm sure he'll be assessed by the US physicians. If it's found to be worse than thought, he'll be released [back to Birmingham]."

Since arriving at St. Andrews as a free agent this summer, Spector has worked six Championship contests and another four in the Europa League, mostly from central midfield. The 25-year-old has 31 US caps to date.
