American Exports: Hahnemann moves over to Everton

AMSTERDAM — Free-agent netminder Marcus Hahnemann has signed a deal to back up US teammate Tim Howard at Everton until the year's end.

The timing of the contract expiration will allow the 39-year-old to either latch on with the Toffees a bit longer or make an MLS return. Hahnemann, who left Wolverhampton this past summer, will for the time act as an insurance policy for David Moyes.

"The manager felt he needed another capable 'keeper with experience," Everton press officer Darren Griffiths told MLSsoccer.com on Friday. "Marcus was available and obviously fits that bill."

Howard is set to start his 150th consecutive EPL match for Everton at Manchester City on Saturday and also works most of the cup matches, so Hahnemann will be battling Slovakia netminder Jan Mucha for the No. 2 role.

The former Colorado Rapids and Seattle Sounders 'keeper has also played for Fulham, Rochdale and Reading.
