Gringo Report: Torres, Pachuca topple Castillo, América
GUADALAJARA, Mexico — In an end-to-end game, José Francisco Torres’ Pachuca beat Edgar Castillo’s Club América on Saturday, 2-0. Torres was brought off after 83 minutes, but Castillo played the full 90 minutes for an under-pressure América, who are performing below expectations.
Both Torres and Castillo will now join up with the US squad in preparation for Friday’s friendly against Costa Rica in Carson, Calif.
Also joining the squad is San Luis’ Michael Orozco Fiscal, who played the full game in his team’s 2-0 win over Miguel Ángel Ponce’s Guadalajara on Saturday. It was the first time Ponce had tasted defeat this season with Chivas. As Orozco Fiscal heads north, Ponce joins up with Mexico’s Under-22 squad for two friendly games.
Los Angeles-born Joe Corona also goes to Mexico’s U-22 camp after Tijuana’s game Sunday. Corona played 90 minutes but the border team could only tie 1-1 against Querétaro and continue a slow start to life in Mexico’s first division.
Also in Sunday action, former Chicago Fire winger DaMarcus Beasley started for Puebla in a dull 0-0 tie against the LA Galaxy’s next opponents in the CONCACAF Champions League, Morelia.
Over on the coast in Cancún on Saturday, Herculez Gomez came on in the 74th minute for Estudiantes Tecos against Atlante when the team was 2-0 down with only 10 men. The Las Vegas-raised striker could do little to stop Estudiantes being defeated, although they did pull one goal back.
In the Liga de Ascenso, Marco Vidal completed the full 90 for Club León as they won 2-1 against Lobos BUAP.
Sonny Guadarrama also had a notable performance, scoring four second-half goals for Atlante’s Under-20 team against Estudiantes Tecos. Last week he made his first appearance of the season for the first team.
