Bravo, Sporting KC to host Guadalajara in Oct. friendly

Sporting Kansas City’s Omar Bravo will get a chance to measure up against his former team when Mexican giants Chivas de Guadalajara visit Livestrong Sporting Park for an exhibition match on October 12, the club announced on Tuesday.

Bravo, who signed with Sporting KC last season but didn’t make his MLS debut until the current campaign, carved his name at Guadalajara, becoming an icon and fan favorite thanks to his goal-scoring prowess, which saw him leave as the club’s second all-time leading scorer with 108 goals.

“I’m delighted that a team with such a proud history and strong support will come play in Kansas City,” Bravo said in a press release. “Fans can look forward to this game as a rare opportunity to see some of the top players in Mexico. I hope it is a great game and I hope the fans enjoy seeing us compete against Mexico’s most popular team.”

Guadalajara will make a quick return to the US on the backs of their participation in the 2011 Herbalife World Football Challenge, where they lost to Real Madrid and Juventus before closing out with a spectacular win against FC Barcelona.

Led by Mexican internationals Luis Ernesto Míchel, Jonny Magallón, Alberto Medina and Héctor Reynoso, as well as firecracker Marco Fabián de la Mora, Chivas are currently in first place in the Mexican First Division with a 4-0-1 record and boast the league’s best defense thus far, having allowed just three goals.

Sporting Kansas City, meanwhile, have surged to second place in MLS’ Eastern Conference, posting an 8-1-8 record in their last 17 matches. The match against Guadalajara will be Sporting’s second and final friendly of the season, having played English Premier League side Newcastle United to a scoreless tie on July 20.
