Eddie Johnson-to-MLS deal falls through

NEW YORK -- On Tuesday, it appeared that former US international Eddie Johnson was on his way back to MLS; however, the league has revealed that the deal has fallen through.

“We had reached agreement, subject to formal documents,” MLS Executive Vice President of Competition and Player Relations Todd Durbin told MLSsoccer.com on Wednesday. "It’s unfortunate the player did not want to conclude a formal agreement, but we wish him well in his future endeavors."

During media conference call on Tuesday to announce amendments to MLS’ designated player rule, Durbin mentioned that a deal was in place to bring Johnson back to the league. “EJ,” who scored 41 regular-season goals with Dallas and Kansas City between 2001 and 2007, would’ve gone into the allocation process to determine which club he would join.

However, at some point on Tuesday evening, Johnson, 27, decided to decline the agreed terms.

No word yet on Johnson's future plans though recent reports claimed there was interest from Greek club Aris, where he spent time on loan in 2010.
