American Exports: Garza on trial at Sweden's Örebro SK
AMSTERDAM — After auditioning with Norwegian side Vålerenga last week, US Under-20 national team left back Gregory Garza has hopped the border to try his luck with Örebro SK in Sweden.
Garza, who was in uniform for Portuguese second-flight side Estoril last season, is a product of the Sporting CP youth academy.
"He arrived yesterday before our game," ÖSK spokesman Magnus Sköldmark told MLSsoccer.com on Monday. "He watched the game and started training with us today. We will have a look at him until Thursday."
The Swedish top-flight club, which employs US midfielder Alejandro Bedoya through season's end in December, is specifically looking for a prospect who can eventually replace veteran mainstay Samuel Wowoah.
"We have a long-standing player who has a year left on his contract, but we are looking for a young, promising player in this position," said Sköldmark. "Greg matched the things we were looking for and we were interested in him."
Garza has become the fifth American player to audition for the club this summer, following Santiago Bedoya, Austin Berry, Brian Span and Nate Weiss. Currently in eighth place on a three-game win streak, Örebro next see action at Djurgårdens on Sunday.
