Perkins kick-saves his way to MLS Save of the Week
Troy Perkins may have forgotten which sport he was playing last Saturday.
The Timbers goalkeeper made a hockey-style kick-save in stoppage time against the Chicago Fire, sealing Portland’s first-ever road win as an MLS franchise as well as the MLS Save of the Week for Week 18.
Chicago’s Marco Pappa unloaded a left-footed one-timer from 25 yards out that darted its way through traffic and seemed destined to equalize for the home side. Perkins wasn’t able to track the ball until it was nearly in the back of the net, but his quick reactions enabled him to kick the ball wide in an effort that would have made legendary hockey goalie Martin Brodeur proud.
Perkins was the clear favorite for this week’s award, piling up an astounding 76 percent of the vote. It is his third nod of the year and second straight for the Portland netminder, who finished well ahead of second-place finisher Will Hesmer of the Columbus Crew.
