If you’ve seen even one of Brek Shea’s smooth crosses or swashbuckling runs through an opponents back line, you know the FC Dallas midfielder is an artist on the field.

But don’t let the jock job fool you; he’s also creative off of the field as well.

When not wearing the colors of FC Dallas, Shea works in color and water on a makeshift easel in the basement of his North Texas home creating colorful, abstract paintings. The results are as eye-catching as they are unexpected from someone who lacks any formal training.

“I was at a friend’s house and he does a little painting, and I guess I was inspired [by him],” Shea said. “I started with little bitty canvas and trying to draw things, and it became bigger canvases and more abstract.”

Interestingly, opinions on Shea’s art are just as subjective as pundits’ opinions on players.

“I have pieces that I do and immediately hate it and then a week later I love it. And then I have pieces I love at first and then I end up painting over it because I don’t like it all. And then there are pieces that I don’t like but everyone else likes. I don’t know, I guess that’s art.”
