Seattle Sounders midfielder Álvaro Fernández has been included in a preliminary list of call-ups announced by the Uruguayan national team ahead of an exhibition against Germany on May 29 in a rematch of the third-place game at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, won by the Europeans.

Uruguay manager Óscar Washington Tabárez, who led the South American nation to a fourth place finish at the 2010 World Cup, named a squad of 23 players, all who play outside of Uruguay. World Cup Golden Ball winner Diego Forlán headlines the list, together with Liverpool’s Luis Suárez and Napoli’s Edinson Cavani.

Fernández, who appeared in four matches for Uruguay at the World Cup, has become a starting fixture at left midfield for the Sounders ever since Steve Zakuani went down to injury following a tackle by Colorado’s Brian Mullan on April 22 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Given that it’s a friendly, Seattle are obliged to release Fernandez 48 hours before the May 29 match. Although he will be available to play on Wednesday, May 25, in a home match against FC Dallas, he would miss the Saturday, May 28, trip to Rio Tinto Stadium.

The friendly against Germany, which will be played at the home of Bundesliga side Hoffenheim in Sinsheim, Germany, will prove an important opportunity for Fernández to lock down a spot on the team that Tabárez will take to the 2011 Copa América in July.
