Ferreira undergoes successful surgery on broken ankle

FRISCO, Texas – FC Dallas star David Ferreira had successful surgery on Tuesday to repair a double fracture in his right ankle, according to head coach Schellas Hyndman.

The 2010 MLS MVP has been sidelined since April 23, when a challenge by Jonathan Leathers forced him out of FCD’s win at Vancouver early in the second half.

According to Hyndman, the procedure was performed by Dr. Eugene Curry at the WB Carrell Memorial Clinic in Dallas. Curry serves as an orthopedic subspecialist consultant to both the Dallas Cowboys and the Dallas Stars.

“From all indications that we have, and this is coming from the doctor, it was a very good surgery,” Hyndman told reporters on Wednesday. “I think [Ferreira] was very concerned whether he had it done here or go back to Colombia and have it done.”

Hyndman added that Ferreira interviewed several doctors and chose Dr. Curry, who is fluent in medical Spanish, according to the clinic’s website, and Ferreira wanted to return to FC Dallas 100 percent and not 55 percent.

“I went yesterday as soon as he came out of the surgery and saw him,” Hyndman said. “We had him spend the night – it was pretty painful – and then I stopped by this morning to see him.”

The 31-year-old Colombian star is expected to miss several months before returning to action.
