Gringo Report: Gómez finds net vs. Bornstein
In a Mexican Primera División midweek fixture, US international Hérculez Gómez again found the net for Pachuca. However, it was too little too late as US left back Jonathan Bornstein and Tigres routed the Tuzos, 4-2.
With the score 4-1 in the 90th minute, Gómez showed his speed by catching up to an Édgar Benitez chipped through ball, dribbled around the goalie and slotted through for his third goal in two games.
On the other end of the pitch, Bornstein came in the 86th minute to help Tigres secure the win and keep a hold of the top spot in Group 1.
Elsewhere, left back Miguel Ángel Ponce was back in the starting lineup and put in a full shift as Chivas continued their recent string of wins with a 2-1 victory at Toluca.
Chivas gave up a one-goal lead in the 15th minute, just three minutes after scoring their first. It took el Rebaño Sagrado just over 50 minutes to score the winner.
The result – the Rojiblanco’s fourth win in a row – helps the team keep pace with Tigres in Group 1. With three matches remaining, Chivas look like they’re heading to the playoffs.
Édgar Castillo, who scored his first goal in a Puebla uniform last weekend, was rewarded by getting his first start in nine weeks. However, he couldn’t keep La Franja from falling 4-0 to Santos.
The speedy defender manned the left side of defense for 65 minutes but was unable to create anything of note for Puebla, who remained in fifth place of Group 3.
Also on the losing end was Isaác Acuña, who saw action in his first game back from injury in Querétaro’s 4-1 loss to Atlante.
Acuña played the entire first half, but despite owning three goals in seven games to his credit, he was unable to help los Gallos Blancos recover from a three-goal hole before being subbed off.
A win would’ve assured Querétaro one more season in the top flight. But because of the loss, Querétaro remain in fourth place of Group 4 and are still in danger of relegation.
