WORLD MALARIA DAY - APRIL 25, 2012

Dear MLS Fans:

Although malaria has mostly been eliminated in North America, an estimated 200 million cases are still detected each year in other parts of the world, and nearly 600,000 of those infected die from the disease - most of them children under the age of five.  With proper use, bed nets can curb malaria transmission by up to 90 percent and are an easy cost-effective tool to keep families safe.

According to The World Health Organization, enough nets have been delivered to cover 76 percent of the people at risk for malaria, and 11 African countries have cut malaria rates in half, in less than three years.  Malaria rates are dropping across Africa because of the hundreds of thousands of supporters, like you.

In honor of World Malaria Day, April 25, join MLS W.O.R.K.S. and me as we help more than 130,000 refugees who have entered South Sudan and its surrounding countries to escape fighting on the border of Sudan.  As the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) helps provide food, water and shelter, the UN Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign is working to send 100,000 life-saving bed nets to help these families sleep safely.

I witnessed the effects of malaria in 2007 when I joined Nothing But Nets to deliver bed nets in Mali, and a few of my fellow players in the League have felt those effects firsthand while watching family, friends or battling the disease themselves.  The solution is simple…It costs just $10 to buy a bed net, distribute it and educate communities on its use.

Send a Net.  Save a Life.
