TORONTO – The Colorado Rapids earned their first MLS Cup trophy after defeating FC Dallas 2-1 in overtime in front of a crowd of 21,700 at BMO Field in Toronto.

The title is the first for the Denver-based franchise, who was making their first appearance in the championship game since the 1997 campaign when they bowed to D.C. United by the same score of 2-1.

The Rapids forced the game winner off an own goal from FC Dallas defender George John in the 107th minute. Colorado substitute forward Macoumba Kandji danced his way through the box and forced the ball across the middle, where it took a deflection off the leg of John and found its way past Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman and into the back of the net.

David Ferreira gave FC Dallas, who was competing in its first-ever MLS Cup, a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute. Ferreira, the regular season Most Valuable Player, volleyed home a cross from Marvin Chavez from just outside the six-yard box.

Conor Casey earned game MVP honors after his 56th minute equalizer forced overtime, the seventh such occasion in the league’s 15 year history.
