MLS Cup 1999 - D.C. United 2, Los Angeles Galaxy 0
FOXBOROUGH – D.C. United defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy, 2-0, to capture the club’s third MLS Cup in front of 44,910 fans at Foxborough Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
The Galaxy suffered the loss of MLS Defender of the Year, Robin Fraser, just nine minutes into the match when he left with an apparent collarbone injury.
Los Angeles’s backline felt his absence when D.C.’s Jaime Moreno poked in a rebound after a scramble in the box in the 19th minute to give United a 1-0 lead.
A bizarre blunder by Galaxy goalkeeper Kevin Hartman in the 45th minute allowed for D.C.’s Ben Olsen to extend the advantage to 2-0. Hartman had difficulty clearing the ball out of his box before it fell to the feet of Olsen, the game’s MVP, who connected from 20 yards out on an empty net.
With the win, D.C. continued their early dominance of Major League Soccer, appearing in the MLS Cup for the fourth consecutive year and seizing their third league crown.
