Seattle Sounders 2, Montreal Impact 0 | MLS Match Recap

MONTREAL – Similar to their winner against Sporting Kansas City two weeks ago, a bounce off the crossbar smiled upon Seattle. Only this time, it didn’t wait until second-half stoppage time.

A Troy Perkins own goal in the eighth minute gave the Seattle Sounders all they needed in a 2-0 win Sunday afternoon against the Montreal Impact at Olympic Stadium. Obafemi Martins, dangerous throughout, added the second in the 58th minute.

One of a handful of Hassoun Camara fouls on Martins allowed Gonzalo Pineda to curl a fine dead-ball delivery for the winning goal. Former Impact player Lamar Neagle’s header seemed to throw off Perkins, who rushed back to cover the far post only for the ball to kiss the crossbar and rebound off him into the net.

Perkins redeemed himself with a difficult save on a well-placed Martins header in the 17th minute. He nearly conceded a second, though, 14 minutes later as Seattle kept threatening. Martins led a quick counter on the left of the Impact’s defense and slipped Neagle through. Neagle’s low shot to Perkins’ right hit the post, but there was no obstacle to redirect it in this time.

Montreal tried to stretch the Seattle defense by working the ball wide and pumping several crosses in, particularly on young Dylan Remick’s side. It was on the opposite side, however, that Montreal got their best opportunity as Eric Miller nodded Hernan Bernardello’s 57th-minute corner kick into the path of Camara, whose header barely missed the frame.

A minute later, Martins struck to all but sink the Impact to a third straight defeat to start the season.

A Neagle attempt appeared bound to go out for a corner kick, but Kenny Cooper picked up the loose ball and crossed for Martins at the far post. Perkins’ commendable attempt to keep it out was in vain.

It sealed Seattle’s second win of the season and their first ever against the Impact.

Eric Miller’s late attempt at a consolation goal for Montreal, meanwhile, smacked the post.

The Impact hit the road again Saturday, as they face the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park. The Sounders will be back at home the same day hosting the Columbus Crew.
