Vancouver Whitecaps 3, Chivas USA 1 | MLS Match Recap
VANCOUVER, B.C. – Eighty-two seconds of magic proved the difference Wednesday night at BC Place, as the Vancouver Whitecaps defeated Chivas USA 3-1 in front of 16,130.
The decisive goals both came in first-half stoppage time, first as Jordan Harvey got on the end of a loose ball at the edge of the area after Camilo Sanvezzo swung and missed on a Russell Teibert pass. That goal marked the fullback’s third goal in four matches.
Moments later, Camilo fired the Whitecaps into the ascendancy, after Teibert stripped Gabriel Farfan on the wing before finding the Brazilian. Camilo made no mistake, turning Mario de Luna before firing across goal into the bottom left corner.
Camilo scored his second in the 81st minute to seal the win, banging home a loose ball in the area which deflected off Wálter Vílchez before finding the netting.
Vancouver's three goals came as a response to falling behind to the visitor's less than 10 minutes into the match. Tristan Bowen fired a ball into the top left corner of Brad Knighton’s goal in the seventh minute after Harvey backed up and allowed the player to shoot.
The Whitecaps had their first real chance in the 17th minute as Kenny Miller fired in a left-footed cross from the right to an unmarked Camilo, but he sent his free header high and wide.
Jorge Villafaña came close on a Chivas counter in the 26th minute, beating Carlyle Mitchell and having a try at goal, only to see his effort strike the back of Johnny Leverón, before the ‘Caps managed to clear.
Miller got on the end of a nice three-way play between Leveron and Camilo in the 33rd minute, but his outside the foot effort went harmlessly wide to the right of target.
The 'Caps nearly put a fourth goal in second-half stoppage time, but a courageous effort by de Luna stopped two chances inside the six yard box. First blocking a Camilo backheel to prevent the forward scoring a hat-trick, before throwing his chest in front of a Matt Watson close-range effort.
The Whitecaps (5-3-3) are back in action on June 29, as they travel to RFK Stadium to face D.C. United. Chivas USA (4-6-1) meanwhile get back into action Sunday, taking on SuperClasico rivals LA Galaxy at StubHub Center.
